Remember Zoe, in the calculation for a Solar Return you can put, as Time Set, 0 or -1 or +5: it is not influential. I think that the best way to learn calculating a Solar Return or a Lunar Return is to study a specific book as the one that you see above and that you can get here:

How you can make Calculations by Hand
First of all, let me clear the air of possible misunderstanding. In fact, we often hear conversations like this: “When he casts the Houses, Mr. Discepolo does not subtract the time zone, while Mr. Smith does.” An inexperienced reader might think that there are two different mathematical calculations implying different results. Of course, it is not so. It is simply a case of two individuals blowing their noses in different ways.
One raises the handkerchief directly to his nose, while the other passes the kerchief below his knee before raising it to the nose. The first method is simpler; the other is a little more cumbersome. Therefore, please accept a golden advice. When you want to follow an author, follow him from the very beginning, i.e. from how to calculate an Ascendant; then let him lead you to the more complex calculations.
I personally believe that, today, wasting time to calculate and draw natal charts and charts of Solar Returns by hand is absolutely anachronistic, since there are affordable computer programs that can do it for you in seconds. Also, if you visit my main web page, www.cirodiscepolo.it, you can use my computing engines for free, that allow you to calculate and draw – in a very precise way – any birth chart and any chart of Solar Return you wish for each point on the Earth: even small villages with a few hundred inhabitants.
Remember that my web pages are supported by a huge database of locations across the world, that accounts for their relevant time zone – both current and historical. For example, the database ‘knows’ in which years there have been summer time in force in different countries; starting from which year has Ireland applied the Zero time zone; the years and countries where ‘War-Time’ was followed, and so on.
On the other hand, it seems reasonable that an astrologer should first learn to do the required calculations by hand, and only after becoming familiar with it, should break free of this tedious exercise.
Given below are some practical examples. I recommend you to meticulously follow every step without taking any liberties that may affect your complete understanding of the process involved.
Let us start with a celebrity whom we have already met in this book. I refer to Marilyn Monroe’s birth chart, as well as to her Solar Return preceding her death, which took place under unclear circumstances on the 5th of August 1962, at her Los Angeles mansion. She was also born in Los Angeles on the 1st of June 1926, at 9:30 am Pacific Standard Time – corresponding to 8 hours west of Greenwich, London.
To begin the exercise of casting a Solar Return chart, we have to determine the corresponding Greenwich Time when the Sun returned – in June 1962 – exactly on the longitude of the Sun in Marilyn’s Natal horoscope, which is 10° 26' 36" in Gemini. Then we proceed to browse the page of June 1962 in my professional Ephemerides 1920-2000 (published in Italy by Armenia). There we identify the two longitudes (and their corresponding dates) within which Marilyn’s birth Sun’s longitude falls. They are respectively, 10°59’15" on the 2nd June and 10°01’44" on the 1st June 1926, at 0:00 GMT. Subtracting the smaller longitude from the larger we get to know the apparent speed of the Sun for the 24 hour period:
10°59’15" – 10°01’44" = 0°57’31".
Now, consider the following figure. It has been intentionally schematized without proportions, but it may help making the concept clearer.
As a next step, we subtract the smaller longitude (i.e. A) from the birth longitude of the Sun (B). The result is as follows:
(B)10°26’36" – (A)10°01’44" = 0°24’52"
This is the angular distance (B – A), which is a measure of how much the Sun moved from the beginning of the previous day to the point that corresponds to the position of the Natal Sun. The interpolation is not perfectly linear, but the deviation from the true value is negligible. This is the value that you have to look for in the tables of the ‘Daily pace of the Sun’ enclosed in my volume I transiti, published by Armenia editore.
In particular, you have to open the page containing the daily pace of 0°57’31", i.e. the closest one to the pace that we have just calculated: 57’30" above. In the relevant column, you have to look for the value nearest to 24’52" and note the corresponding value in time: 10h 25m (This value is the time equivalent of 24’57", which is closest value to the one we have just calculated.) If we had let a computer do the calculations, the result would have been: 10 hours and 22 minutes.
What does this result mean? It represents the exact time of the Solar Return of Marilyn Monroe, on the day 1st of June 1964, in Greenwich.
We have now laid the cornerstone for casting Marilyn’s chart of Solar Return. In order to ‘domificate’ – i.e. to cast the Ascendant of SR and subdivide the whole chart into the twelve Houses – we have to know where Marilyn was physically at that moment.
It appears likely that she was in Los Angeles or nearby. Therefore, you have to subtract 8 hours (corresponding to the time difference between London and Los Angeles) from the time that we have just calculated, which gives you a result of 2:25.
Now all that we have to do is to cast a fictional birth chart as if a baby was born on 1st June 1962, at 2:25 in Los Angeles. The resulting chart is also the horoscope of Marilyn Monroe’s Solar Return of that year. It has the Ascendant at 26°17' Aries, and the Midheaven at 16°04' Capricorn. If we had had a computer do the calculations, we would have obtained slight differences:
AS = 25°12' Aries
MC = 15°22' Capricorn
Now let us imagine that the beautiful actress spent the SR in Rome. How would we have cast the Solar Return? It is quite easy. We would have added the time that separates Italy from Greenwich (Rome is east of London). In other words, we would have cast the fictional birth chart of a baby born in Rome at 11:25, with these results:
AS = 5°06' Virgo
MC = 0°20' Gemini
Let us look at one more example. Assume that Marilyn spent her birthday of 1962 in Sydney, Australia. So, always starting from 10:25 London time, you add (because Australia is also east of Greenwich) 10 hours, corresponding to the time zone of Sydney as compared to that of Greenwich. We now cast the fictional birth chart of a baby born on the 1st June 1962 at 20:25 in Sydney – not forgetting that Sydney is located in the Southern Hemisphere. The new chart has:
AS = 29°11' Capricorn
MC = 18°21' Libra
In all these three locations, the Sun will have the same longitude, i.e. 10°26’36".
As you can see, there is absolutely no need to take into consideration the summer time that could have been in force in a given place.
You have also seen that it is very easy to perform these calculations. On the other hand, why bother when there are computers that can do the job for us?
There is also a third way to do these calculations, a semi-automatic method. This interactive page allows you to perform calculations in sexagesimal. You can add, subtract, multiply or divide values expressed in degrees, minutes and seconds or in hours, minutes and seconds. What is it for? Hopefully, the following example makes it clearer. Suppose we want to know the hourly pace of the Sun for a given date, say the 15th of April 2009. Open a volume of ephemerides. There you can find that on that day at 0:00, the Sun is 25°09’42'’ Aries, and that the following day at the same time, it is 26°08’25'’ Aries. The first step is subtracting the two values, which allows you to know how much the Sun has moved in those 24 hours:
26°08’25'’ – 25°09’42'’ that, with the help of this page, turns out to be 0°58’43'’00 (The double zero stands for hundredths of a second.).
Now, to know the hourly pace of the Sun, you must divide this value for 24:
0°58’43'’ / 24
Once again, the conversion algorithm of this page gives you the correct result: 0°02’26'’79 (79 stands for 79 hundredths of a second.).
What is the use in knowing the hourly pace of the Sun? For example, in casting a chart of Solar Return, suppose you are considering a birth in Treviso, Italy, on the 16th of April 1955, at 12:25 pm, and you want to calculate at what time (GMT) the Sun comes back to its natal position in 2009.
You know that the longitude of the natal Sun in the subject’s birth chart is 25°42’05'’, therefore, in 2009, his or her astrological/astronomical birthday is on the 15th – not on the 16th of April. And – at what time?
On the 15th of April 2009 at 0:00, the Sun is located at 25°09’42'’ of Aries. To reach 25°42’5'’, it has to move by 32’23'’.
Hence we can set the following proportion:
if the Sun moves by 0°02’26'’79 every hour, how many hours does it take to move by 32’23'’?
0°02’26'’79 / 1 = 32’23'’ / x
where x = (32’23'’ × 1) / 0°02’26'’79
Now you have the following possibilities:
1) You use a precise software programme of astrology that does everything for you; or
2) You use the tables of interpolation given in my volume I transiti, published by Armenia editore; or
3) You use this webpage and its interactive algorithm.
In any case, the result is 13 hours 14 minutes 11 seconds 75 hundredths of a second, which means that the subject’s birthday takes place at 13:14 London time.
The same procedure also allows you to calculate easily Natal charts, Lunar Returns, primary directions and everything you need and has to do with degrees, minutes and seconds or with hours, minutes and seconds.

This review is from: Transits And Solar Returns; A New System of Analysis for Two Ancient Methods (Paperback)This is an excellent compilation of Ciro Discepolo's research. In it, he clearly describes the principles of his "Active Astrology" method. In that I have been an astrological practitioner for many years, it's easy for me to see that his descriptions are based on sound astrological principles. For some the translation into English might be a little difficult, but untangling some of the idiomatic expressions and metaphors he uses can be a lot of fun, in fact, I find his writing as enjoyable as his overall concept.
What makes this particular book unique is the clear explanation of the basics of the system he works with. Starting with certain fundamental axioms about the structure of the Solar Return chart, he makes it clear that you can actively change this structure and therefore change the indications for the entire year. This is what could be called (in a mixture of modern and Elizabethan metaphors) "tweaking the accidental dignities." Although he uses many examples to show that this is a verifiable principle, he doesn't go deeply into methods other than "aimed" Solar Returns, or traveling to the location of the best possible chart, for moderating the effects of transits. He has written other books that cover the subject in greater depth; please see my review of Aimed Solar and Lunar Returns for more about this. He does remind the student over and over again that the effects of a given transit are subject to the quality of the Solar Return in which they fall, and that's really important to the way this method works.
The reason I titled this review "not for amateurs" is simple. Someone who has not worked with astrological charts and predictive methods could be frightened by some of what he says, and when emotions get involved, the basic principles go out the window. Adding more on timing transits would be helpful for beginners as well. These additions would make it easier for more excitable beginners to relax and enjoy the writing as much as I do.
One more thing - these charts are calculated in the tropical zodiac without precession. I learned a number of years ago that this type of chart (which I refused to use for a number of years because my involvement with sidereal techniques and methods) can actually be very accurate if you base your interpretation on the planets in the houses.
The Aimed Solar Return gives an entirely new perspective as to what to do with this type of chart. Again, others may find plenty to criticize about the book, but I found it very enjoyable reading. I'm actually on my 3rd copy now, and still having fun with it. Aiming the Solar Return and "Exorcism of the Symbol" work. Period. This is a great book if you're interested in learning to use astrology in a proactive and preemptive way.
Here is the key of my method. I work a lot on the Houses and not on the Signs or on the Signs' degrees. I will depart almost every month for the Lunar Returns and for the Solar Returns and I work a lot on the House's Cusps (+ or - 2,5 degrees from the border). Sometimes I travel in a precise point of the desert or of the Siberia territory (by my GPS instrument) to get that precise cusp. Every month I receive confirms of the goodness of this method, in the last 42 years: from my Lunar and Solar Returns and from the ones of my thousands of students and of colleagues of mine that in the whole world apply my rules. If I change the moment of the Lunar Return also of 15 minutes, I get different results: completely.

Riguardo la RSM di mia madre (14 agosto44 Ta 11.30) anche la località suggeritami qui sul blog (flores Azzorre)avrebbe comportato la congiunzione Marte Saturno in ottava e non in nona e Se non erro il sole al limite della cuspide sesta settima. In ogni caso oramai ho preso i biglietti per palma e mi consoli pensando che almeno quella pessima congiunzione nOn sarà in sesta. Vi faro sapere speriamo bene e grazie ancora

credo tu sia in errore perché la cuspide 9^ per Flores è a 21°47', Marte si trova a 23°49' e Saturno a 24°42'. Dunque, teoricamente Marte si troverebbe in cuspide 8^: Marte, non la congiunzione Marte-Saturno! Teoricamente. Perché gli orari sono quasi sempre arrotondati per eccesso e quindi, 90 su 100 anche Marte sarebbe fuori della cuspide. Il Sole, invece, si trova al centro della VII Casa e non al limite con la sesta. Per quanto riguarda la tua scelta di metterle il Sole in sesta e Marte e Saturno al centro dell'8^ Casa essa non può lasciarci per nulla sereni, ma ti mandiamo comunque molti auguri.
Caro Ciro, volevo sottoporti il caso del mio collega di lavoro nato a Arona (NO) il 08/12/1956 alle ore 17.30. La sua RS per l'anno 2012/2013 per Lesa (NO) é bruttissima con un punteggio di 22 (positivo) e 102 (negativo). Il problema piu' grave é che lui ha il terrore di qualsiasi mezzo di trasporto (tranne il treno e l'auto) e quindi si trova impossibilitato a raggiungere mete lontane in tempi brevi. Io avevo pensato a Malé nelle Maldive ma visto le sue paure per l'aereo il tutto risulta difficile. Aspetto fiduciosa un tuo prezioso consiglio.- Un abbraccio.

effettivamente la sua ASR 2012 per Lesa è davvero da brivido! A essere sincero non mi piace tanto neanche quella per le Maldive con un pesante Saturno in 8^ Casa che di questi tempi può essere una specie di mannaia... Ti consiglio, invece, Antalaha, nel Madagascar, che è certamente migliore e più potente. Molti auguri.

A parte gli interventi sono stanca d'avere RL da brivido. So perfettamente che una buona RSM ci protegge e alla fine si vedono i risutati, ma qui ogni mese in casa ho una lite a coltello... per cui
avrei pensato a un attimo di pace con due RLM.
Se rimarrò a Milano per il mese di Luglio la mia RL a Milano avrà il sole in I casa con un Marte e Saturno in 4 dove di RSM ho già Saturno in 4 per allegerire questa RL avrei scelto come località Barcellona mentre per il mese d'Agosto avrei scelto Doha, ma ad essere sincera quel quel Marte e Saturno in 11 visto che ho una mamma malata mi mettono angoscia

a me sembra che con questi parametri l'equazione non si risolve. Per quanto riguarda Barcellona, sicuramente tale ALR è decisamente migliore di quella di Milano. Tuttavia, se ho ben capito quello che temi, la Luna in 12^, l'AS in X, Marte in IV e Urano in 8^, se è scritto, faranno ugualmente il loro sporco lavoro. Relativamente alla RLM di Agosto hai risposto tu stessa: se desideri ottenere un risultato, devi muoverti dalle parti di Singapore. Diversamente ti sconsiglio fortemente di spostarti.

con tre astri in Aquario e in 11^ Casa, una cuspide di 2^ Casa in Toro e con Urano e Nettuno congiunti al Medio Cielo, ti consiglio sicuramente la musica, anche se partirà molto in ritardo, dato Saturno in 11^. In alternativa può andare bene la laurea breve come infermiere, ma Urano al Medio Cielo ci avverte già che cambierà più lavori nella vita.

come sai io penso che tu sia nata circa 45' prima, per i motivi che tutti conoscono in questo blog. Tuttavia seguirò le tue indicazioni.
Secondo me, con l'attuale passaggio di Nettuno sulla Luna e di Giove in VII Casa, se tu avessi giocato su di un paio di Aimed Solar Returns "con i baffi", magari supportate da 5-6 Aimed Lunar Returns di appoggio, questo sarebbe stato un periodo positivo per realizzare il tuo sogno. Purtroppo fino a marzo prossimo ci siamo giocati questa possibilità dato il tuo compleanno a New York con Saturno in X. Tuttavia ci saranno altri periodi in futuro. Però ricordati che io sono dell'idea che per realizzare un goal occorra agire nella direzione della sinergia: ASR+ALR+Transiti+Rilocazione. Quest'ultima è molto potente e il nostro Angelino59 che si è trasferito da due anni in Thailandia e che ci legge sempre, te lo può confermare. Con i nostri migliori auguri.

In occasione dell’avvicinarsi della congiunzione Marte/Saturno, sappiamo che questo aspetto interesserà anche i campi di una RLM. Mi confermi che c’è differenza tra avere una casa occupata da questi pianeti in congiunzione oppure a più di 10° di distanza?

Cara Danila,
il mio metodo, supportato da una esperienza lunghissima, è basato sulle Case e non sugli aspetti. In una sola condizione tale congiunzione strettissima potrebbe essere particolarmente malefica: quando è sull'Ascendente (o sul Discendente), ma si tratterebbe di una ridondanza perché noi sappiamo già che Marte in I, 6^ e 12^ Casa vale 100 punti negativi su 100 e non si possono raggiungere 200 punti negativi.
